Bjarke Ingels’ new apartment complex in New York is a hybrid between a courtyard house and a condo tower. Commissioned by developer Durst Fenter (great last name by the way) this 600 unit building on West 57th Street in Manhattan represents BIG’s first building in North America.
Project Description From:
Ingels balances the demands of the multi-use New York tower with elements of a European-style housing block. The lowermost floors, housing commercial and cultural facilities, wrap around a landscaped interior courtyard, while the upper reaches of the tower slope sharply downward on one side to give the courtyard maximum exposure to the light and air. Raked terraces on the south-facing apartments let residents take in the scene, and the slim, peaked outline of the building gives it a different silhouette from almost every angle–while saving neighbors’ river views.
